After Peter's eyes get gouged out by birds on the first page, Peter ceases being a human and is solely Blindness in the form of a boy.
Sadly, the author only wanted to use Peter's blindness as a plot device. And to feature a child who is blind as the main character in a fantasy story seemed an awesome prospect. People with physical disabilities are so rarely included in any kind of literature, but especially in books for children.
Do you want your child to learn outdated stereotypes about blind people? Then this is the book for you! Did you know blind people have special powers the rest of us can only dream of? Like being able to smell what is in a locked chest? Or that blind people feel a person's face to figure out what they look like? Ah, but we still must pity them, even if they are our main character, because blind people can’t figure out that much - they can’t see! I tried to find the good in the book.
